At the September Keynote, Apple not only presented iPhones, Apple Watch and AirPods, it also introduced a new collection of its accessories. This stands out especially with the new material that the company uses not only for covers for iPhones, but also for Apple Watch straps. But FineWoven may have a problem.

On the Internet, quite contradictory opinions are beginning to appear. Today, Apple officially started selling its new hardware, and with them, of course, accessories for them. This is how it gets to the first owners, who already try it properly. Criticism prevails especially with regard to the durability of the new material.

According to many of their new owners, this material is very prone to scratches. This is the critical opinion, when the other side praises the new material as a pleasant and durable substitute for leather. But if you know how leather behaves, maybe some scratches in the FineWoven cover or strap are the smallest. It's more about the fact that it's kind of expected of leather, and that every scar gives it character, whereas FineWoven is simply artificial.

No need to rush

First of all, it is important to wait for some more complex and longer tests, because we are only at the beginning of the existence of this material, when it can surprise us a lot in the future, and yes, not only in the good, but also in the bad. In general, the problem may not be that the new material can somehow "age" or suffer from use, like how Apple solved its attachment to the case shell itself. It can easily start to tear, which will certainly be a bigger problem.

Additionally, the cases are very different from the ones we've had here so far, as their sides are not made of the same material. The covers made of leather and silicone took a lot of wear and tear and looked rather unsightly after a while of use, and it is quite likely that this will also happen to the new ones. Where one could be sure that a leather belt would last a long time, the question is now what FineWoven can handle. But we will see that with time.

If you like Apple's new accessory, just buy it. If you have doubts, there are plenty of alternatives on the market after all. Just to get a little closer to the new material, it has a shiny and soft surface, and should at least feel similar to suede, i.e. leather treated by sanding on its reverse side. It's also meant to be a sleek and durable twill material that's 68% recycled.
