Support for Dual SIM mode is undoubtedly one of the biggest innovations of the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR. However, Apple did not equip the phones with a classic slot for two SIM cards, but enriched them with an eSIM, i.e. a chip built directly into the device, which contains a digital imprint of the contents of the classic SIM card. For domestic customers, the DSDS (Dual SIM Dual Standby) mode in the new iPhones is all the more interesting because it will also be available in the Czech Republic. Specifically, it will be possible to activate the eSIM operator T-Mobile, which confirmed to us through a press release that it is ready for the technology and expects to support it as soon as Apple makes it available.

"New iPhone models will initially only support classic SIM cards. But as soon as Apple performs the announced SW update, our customers will be able to use iPhones with everything. T-Mobile is the first in the Czech Republic to be ready to support eSIM technology," said innovation manager Jan Fišer, who is in charge of the eSIM project at T-Mobile.

Apple is currently testing the feature. eSIM support is part of the new iOS 12.1, which is currently in beta testing and is thus available to developers and public testers. It can be found specifically in Settings -> Mobile data. Here, a so-called eSIM profile is uploaded to the phone via a QR code. After that, the device will log in to the mobile network as with a classic SIM card. Multiple eSIM profiles can be saved to the device at the same time, but only one is active at a given moment (i.e. logged in to the mobile network). The update to iOS 12.1 should be available to the public at the turn of October and November.

Based information from Apple, eSIM in new iPhones will be supported in ten countries in the world with a total of fourteen operators. Thanks to T-Mobile, the service will also be available for customers in the Czech Republic. The other two domestic operators plan to support eSIM as well, while they are currently testing the technology, but they have not yet set a date for its deployment.
