An integral part of the annual WWDC conference is, among other things, the awarding of prestigious awards with the title Apple Design Awards. This is an award for independent developers who came up with an application for iPhone, iPad or Mac that year that directly caught the attention of experts from Apple and is considered by them to be the best and most innovative. Apps are not judged by number of downloads or quality of marketing, but purely by the judgment of selected Apple employees. The only condition for participation in the competition is the fact that the distribution of the given application takes place in the iTunes App Store or in the Mac App Store.

Competition for this prestigious award has existed since 1996, but for the first two years the award was called Human Interface Design Excellence (HIDE). Starting in 2003, the physical prize is a cubic trophy with the Apple logo that lights up when touched. The designer group Sparkfactor Design is behind its design. In addition, winners will also receive a MacBook Air, iPad and iPod touch. The categories in which they compete change from year to year, and in 2010, for example, there was no award for Mac software at all.
