If you own a newer car, your infotainment system probably has the option to connect to CarPlay. For those less familiar, CarPlay is a kind of add-on from the apple company that makes it easy to pair a vehicle with an iPhone. CarPlay is directly part of iOS – so it is not a separate system, which means that its updates happen after the iOS operating system is updated. As most of you probably know, Apple presented new operating systems at its own conference called WWDC21 a few days ago, headed by iOS 15. And due to the iOS update, as I already mentioned above, there was also an update to CarPlay. You can find out what features have been added in this article.

Concentration while driving

With the arrival of iOS 15 and other new operating systems, we saw a complete overhaul of the former Do Not Disturb mode, which was renamed Focus mode. Within Focus, you can now set several different Do Not Disturb modes that you can activate in certain situations. This means that, for example, you can create a Do Not Disturb mode at work that will automatically activate after you arrive at work. Compared to the classic Do Not Disturb, however, absolutely all notifications may not be silenced. So you can set it so that, for example, colleagues from work can contact you, or you can still receive notifications from selected applications, which is certainly useful. As part of CarPlay, you can then automatically activate the Focus Driving mode, which you can also set to your taste. In order for Focus while driving mode to start automatically after connecting to CarPlay, go to Settings -> Focus while driving to activate it.

New wallpapers

If you use CarPlay every day, you probably already thought that it would be nice if we could set our own background wallpaper. However, Apple does not allow this, as it selects the wallpapers for CarPlay manually. For some wallpapers that users would set themselves, some texts could merge and visibility would be poor, which could cause an accident in the worst case. So we will probably never see the possibility of using our own wallpapers, but on the other hand, it is nice that we will at least see the release of new wallpapers from time to time. A few wallpapers have also been added as part of the iOS 15 update, see the gallery below. And other functions that we will not enjoy in the Czech Republic

If you receive a message in CarPlay, you will be notified of this fact. If you click on the message, you can listen to the message and possibly reply to it. But the problem is that messages are read by Siri, which most of us have set in English. And as you may have guessed, reading news in Czech in English is not entirely suitable - if you have ever tried this option, you surely know what I am talking about. New in iOS 15, CarPlay has added a new feature for announcing incoming messages using Siri. This feature has been available for AirPods for quite some time and again only works in English, so it's not an ideal solution. If you would at least like to try announcing messages using Siri in CarPlay, you will unfortunately be disappointed - you will not find the box for activating this function in CarPlay Settings at all. In addition, iOS 15 also brings changes to Maps, specifically a detailed display of a few selected metropolises. These are, for example, London, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. This will become part of CarPlay later this year, but again, it has no use for us.
