Even before the launch of the iPhone X, Apple has been rumored to be toying with the idea of integrating Touch ID into the display. According to the latest reports, this should happen within two years, and the future iPhone should therefore offer two authentication methods in the form of a facial recognition system and a fingerprint sensor under the display.

The information was provided today by renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, according to whose statement Apple should solve most of the technical problems it is currently facing when trying to implement a fingerprint sensor in the display in the next 18 months. Specifically, the company addresses the higher consumption of the module, its thickness, the area of the sensing area and finally the speed of the lamination process, i.e. the integration of the sensor between the layers of the display.

Although the engineers from Cupertino already have a certain form of the new generation of Touch ID, their goal is to offer the technology in such a form that it is truly fully functional, reliable and as user-friendly as possible. The maximum success would be if the fingerprint sensor worked across the entire surface of the display. That Apple tends to develop just such a technology, recent patents also prove it companies.

Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the Californian company will be able to construct Touch ID integrated into the display in adequate quality in the following year, and therefore the new technology should be offered by the iPhone released in 2021. The phone will also retain Face ID, because Apple's philosophy is currently such , that both methods complement each other.

However, the possibility that Apple will use an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor from Qualcomm, which makes it possible to scan papillary lines on a fairly large surface, is not completely excluded. After all, this technology is also used by Samsung in its flagship phones, such as the Galaxy S10.
