Some time ago, Apple announced that Bob Mansfield, the head of Apple's hardware division, will end his tenure at Apple and retire within a few months. His position was taken over by Dan Riccio, who until then led the iPad-focused division. Two months later, Apple management had a change of heart and it was announced that Bob Mansfield would remain with the company and even retain the title of senior vice president. It's unclear exactly what Mansfield has in his job description now that Riccio is filling his role. However, he is officially "working on new products" and reports directly to Tim Cook.

The whole story is a bit strange, and new light was brought to the whole situation by a report issued by the agency Bloomberg Businessweek. One year after the death of Steve Jobs, this magazine published the background of all the events surrounding Mansfield. Apple CEO Tim Cook is said to have been inundated with complaints from his employees following the announcement of Mansfield's departure. Engineers from Bob Mansfield's team have reportedly been vocal in their disapproval of the replacement of their boss, stating that Dan Riccio is not ready to take on such a role and fully replace Mansfield.

The protests obviously had a meaning, and Tim Cook kept Bob Mansfield in the hardware division and did not deprive him of the prestigious title of senior vice president. According to Bloomberg Businessweek in addition, Mansfield receives a salary of two million dollars per month (in a combination of cash and stock). The hardware development group is officially under the baton of Dan Ricci. However, it is not clear what the cooperation between Riccio and Mansfield actually looks like, nor under what circumstances the projects of this division are created. It is not yet known how long Mansfield wants to stay in the Cupertino company.
