According to current information and leaks, Apple is preparing an interesting change for us regarding sound quality. Apparently, the new iOS 16 operating system will bring support for the new LC3 Bluetooth codec, thanks to which we should expect not only an overall better and cleaner sound, but also a number of other great benefits.

The arrival of this news was announced by the well-known apple grower ShrimpApplePro, who appears on the social network Twitter. He specifically shared the mention that the LC3 codec support appeared in the beta version of the firmware for the AirPods Max headphones. But it doesn't end there. Even before, the same mention appeared in connection with the expected second generation of AirPods Pro 2 headphones. What exactly will the codec actually bring us, what can we expect from it and with which headphones will you be able to enjoy it? This is exactly what we are going to shed light on together now.

Advantages of the LC3 codec

Since the arrival of the new codec, Apple users promise themselves several great advantages. As already mentioned above, this codec should take care of the transmission of even better sound, or the overall improvement of audio. It is a newer energy-saving Bluetooth codec that, while using less energy, also offers much lower latency compared to previous versions. At the same time, it works at many different bitrates, which makes it possible to add it to different Bluetooth audio profiles. Subsequently, manufacturers can use them to achieve better battery life and provide significantly better sound in the case of wireless audio devices, where we could include, for example, the aforementioned headphones.

Directly according to the information from Bluetooth, the LC3 codec offers significantly better quality sound during the same transmission as the SBC codec, or possibly also a significantly better sound even during more economical transmissions. Thanks to this, you can count on a better sound of Apple AirPods headphones and an increase in their endurance per charge. On the other hand, we have to mention one important thing – it is not a lossless format, and therefore cannot even take advantage of the possibilities offered by the Apple Music streaming platform.

Which AirPods will be compatible with the LC3

Support for the Bluetooth LC3 codec should be received by AirPods Max headphones and the expected AirPods Pro of the 2nd generation. On the other hand, we must mention one rather important fact. For maximum use of the LC3, it is necessary that specific devices have Bluetooth 5.2 technology. And this is precisely the problem, because no AirPods or iPhones have this. The mentioned AirPods Max only offer Bluetooth 5.0. For this reason, it is also starting to be said that only the 2nd generation AirPods Pro will receive this improvement, or quite possibly even phones from the iPhone 14 (Pro) series.
