You can strengthen the security of your iPhone by setting a passcode that will be used to unlock your iPhone when it is turned on or woken up. By setting a passcode, you also turn on data protection, which encrypts data on the iPhone using 256-bit AES encryption. Here are 3 iPhone passcode tips you should know.

1. Changing the amount of time after which the iPhone automatically locks

This is the time that determines how long your iPhone's screen will turn off - and therefore the time it takes to enter a code to use the device again. Of course, you can turn off the display with the appropriate button on the device, but if you work with the iPhone and put it down without manually locking it, this interval will determine how long it will lock itself.

To set the time after which the iPhone will automatically lock, go to Settings -> Display and brightness -> Lockout. Here you can already set values of 30 seconds, 1 to 5 minutes or never. In this case, your iPhone will never lock and will still have an active display. Of course, the time interval also affects the battery life.

2. Erasure of data

You can set iPhone to erase all information, media, and personal settings after 10 consecutive failed passcode attempts. In this case, we strongly advise you to really consider activating this option. If, for example, your child plays with your iPhone, the aforementioned data can easily be lost. However, if you have a backup, you can restore your deleted iPhone from it, otherwise you need to set up your iPhone as a new device.

However, if you still want to activate this option, go to Settings, on iPhones with Face ID, tap Face ID and code, on iPhones with a home button, tap Touch ID and code lock. Then turn on the option here Delete data.

3. Resetting the access code

If you enter an incorrect passcode six times in a row, your iPhone will lock and display a message that it is locked. If you can't remember your passcode, you can erase your iPhone using a computer or recovery mode and then set a new passcode. If you made a backup on iCloud or on your computer before you forgot your passcode, you can restore your data and settings from that backup. If you've never backed up your iPhone and you forget the passcode, there's no way to save data from your iPhone.

To remove the passcode, press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons on iPhone X and later, the side button on iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, and the side or top button on iPhone 6S or earlier until the power off slider appears. Drag the slider to turn off iPhone. After that, you need to connect the iPhone to the computer while holding down the side or top button - keep it pressed until the recovery mode screen appears. If you have a backup of your iPhone, you can restore your data and settings after removing the code.

To restore your device, connect it to your computer. Open your iPhone in Finder or iTunes. When given the choice to restore or update your device, choose Restore. Finder or iTunes for your iPhone will download the software. If it takes more than 15 minutes, iPhone exits recovery mode. You will then need to select your iPhone model again at the top and repeat the code removal process.
