Due to the launch of the Mac App Store, Apple has decided to remove the Downloads section from its website. This is a completely logical move, since all the applications that have been promoted directly on Apple's official website so far should appear on January 6 in the Mac App Store.

Apple informed developers about this in the following email:

Thank you for making the Downloads section a great place for new apps to offer users more and more features.

We recently announced that on January 6th, 2011, we will be launching the Mac App Store, where you have a unique opportunity to acquire millions of new customers. Since launching the App Store in 2008, we've been blown away by incredible developer support and great user response. Now we bring this revolutionary solution to Mac OS X as well.

Because we believe that the Mac App Store will be the best place for users to discover and purchase new applications, we will no longer offer applications on our website. Instead, we'll be navigating users to the Mac App Store starting January 6th.

We appreciate your support of the Mac platform and hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to develop even more applications for users. To learn how to submit apps to the Mac App Store, visit the Apple Developer page at http://developer.apple.com/programs/mac.

There is probably no need to add anything to the message. Perhaps it's just that Apple didn't specify in any way how it will be, for example, with Dashboard widgets or actions for Automator, which were also offered in the Downloads section. It is possible that we will see them directly in the Mac App Store.
