When you look at the portfolios of major technology companies, Apple is still a minor player in terms of the number of its products, although not so much in terms of sales and revenue. Its iPhones are the second best-selling phones in the world, with a user base so large that little would be enough, and Apple would have an inexhaustible gold mine within reach.

In September 2021, Apple reached the milestone of two billion iPhones sold. Of course, among them are also those models that no longer work or are not supported, but if at least half of them were still active, then looking at the fact that there are almost 8 billion people in the world, one in eight is an Apple customer with an iPhone in his pocket, which the company can try to pass on its smart home products as well. There is only one catch - Apple has only one such product.

We are, of course, talking about the HomePod mini, the second version of its speaker, which would desperately need an upgrade in the form of a larger, but probably even smaller sibling, which should be expanded to include smart cameras, thermostats, doorbells and other sensors connected to the Apple ecosystem. Apple has definitely missed its chance at least once, and now it may miss another one.

Google Nest

Nest was founded by former Apple engineers Tony Fadell (known as the father of the iPod) and Matt Rogers. But because Apple didn't care about their ideas, they left, founded their own company, introduced a smart thermostat, and were bought by Google for $3,2 billion. He did not kill the brand, but developed it further. Now he has come to the market with new products, such as Wi-Fi routers, thermostats, doorbells or cameras, just as Apple has redesigned its application for their operation.

Google is a tech giant, but it's not doing so well in selling its Pixel phones. Allegedly, since 2016, he has only sold a few of them 30 million, which is a completely negligible number considering the sales of iPhones. So who buys Nest products? And who would buy Apple's smart home products? iPhone, iPad and Mac owners, of course.

Standard Matter

It's surprising how a company as big as Apple doesn't want to grow even more and expand its portfolio. It simply looks like the HomePod is more or less dead, and that the company is only relying on Matter, the upcoming smart home standard, to let other manufacturers into its ecosystem. That's good, of course, but maybe the billion people would appreciate having everything under one brand, with seamless communication and an ecosystem (which is what Matter should do, but believe it when it's not here yet).

Everyone is talking about the smart future, the Internet of Things, the metaverse (which no one can explain anyway) - but Apple is kind of on the sidelines. Once he also cut his Wi-Fi routers, and we never saw their successors. Apple Park is big, and I believe that there would still be room for a smart home team. However, maybe one day we will see, maybe the team is already there and working diligently. Matter is to be launched in the autumn of this year, and it is not completely excluded that some of the Apple products will not accompany it. Although maybe that's just my wishful thinking.
