Apple this week started selling a new AV adapter for its MacBooks. Compared to the previous version, it underwent significant changes, especially regarding the support of new image modes. You can find it on the Czech version of the official Apple website <a href="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1932/8043/files/200721_ODSTOUPENI_BEZ_UDANI_DUVODU__EN.pdf?v=1595428404" data-gt-href-en="https://en.notsofunnyany.com/">here</a>.

The new USB-C/AV adapter has a USB-C connector on one side, and a hub containing USB-A, USB-C and HDMI on the other. It is precisely HDMI that has received an update. The new adapter features HDMI 2.0, which replaces the older version 1.4b iteration of this connector.

This version of HDMI supports a wider data stream, in practice it will enable the transmission of a new image mode. While the old splitter only supported 4K/30 signal transmission via HDMI, the new one can already handle 4K/60. As for compatibility with 4K/60 transmission, you can achieve it with:

  • 15″ MacBook Pro from 2017 and later
  • Retina iMac from 2017 and later
  • iMac Pro
  • iPad Pro

4K video transmission at 60 frames per second is possible for the above devices that have macOS Mojace 10.14.6 and iOS 12.4 (and later) installed. In addition to changes in the HDMI interface, the new hub also supports HDR transmission, 10-bit color depth and Dolby Vision. The functionality of the USB-A and USB-C ports is the same.

The old model, which was sold for several years, is no longer available. A new one costs less than two thousand and you can buy it <a href="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1932/8043/files/200721_ODSTOUPENI_BEZ_UDANI_DUVODU__EN.pdf?v=1595428404" data-gt-href-en="https://en.notsofunnyany.com/">here</a>.
