Apple and LG are reviving the UltraFine 5K display and presenting its new version. It follows on from the original monitor introduced in 2016 together with the new MacBook Pros and gets extended connectivity through USB-C.

The LG UltraFine 5K is a 27-inch monitor with a resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels, support for a wide P3 color gamut, and a brightness of 500 nits. The display offers connectivity in the form of three USB-C ports and one Thunderbolt 3 port, which is capable of supplying the connected computer with power of up to 94 W.

In these aspects, the new generation is no different from the previous one. What is new, however, is that it is now possible to connect the monitor to a computer or tablet via the USB-C port, so it can also be used with a 12″ MacBook or even an iPad Pro.

"You connect the UltraFine 5K display to a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air with the included Thunderbolt 3 cable, which transmits 5K video, sound and data simultaneously. You can connect the UltraFine 5K display to a MacBook or iPad Pro with the included USB‑C cable. The display powers the connected computer with a power consumption of up to 94 W," says Apple in the description of the display on its website.

However, it is worth noting that when connected to the iPad Pro, the monitor will not display a full 5K resolution, but only 4K, namely 3840 x 2160 pixels at a refresh rate of 60Hz. This small but important detail is not mentioned by Apple in the product description, but on separate pages support pages, and moreover only in the English version of the document. The lower resolution will also be displayed when a Retina MacBook is connected.

The LG UltraFine 5K can be purchased on Apple's website, including in the Czech Republic. The price stopped at 36 crowns. Together with the display, you will receive a two-meter Thunderbolt 999 cable, a one-meter USB‑C cable, a power cable and a VESA adapter.
