Back to My Mac is a feature Apple introduced with Mac OS X Leopard 10.5. The feature allowed setting up a Mac's network connection and remote access, including sharing files and folders, managing them, or sharing the screen. However, Apple and users of the macOS Mojave operating system will say goodbye to this function for good.

In addition to the aforementioned file and folder sharing and screen sharing, Back to My Mac can also work with a number of Bonjour services. The condition is to own a router with support for Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) or NAT Port Mapping protocol (NAT - PMP), and one of these services must be activated on the connected router. On October 12, 2011, Apple included the Back to My Mac feature in its iCloud services instead of the previous MobileMe, making it available to users completely free of charge.

But in the new macOS Mojave, the official version of which will be released this fall, Back to My Mac will no longer be available. Apple officially ended its development and operation this week, alerted users to this fact and published it dokument, regarding the relevant changes. It mentions the ways in which users can replace the service. "Back to My Mac will not be available in macOS Mojave," Apple writes in the document, adding that users who want to be prepared for the end can start exploring alternative options for file and folder sharing, screen sharing, and remote desktop access now .

The service was a great way for screen sharing and remote access, for example, for users who owned both a laptop and a desktop Apple computer. However, the need for this service has been somewhat reduced by the introduction of iCloud Drive and the Remote Desktop application.

Back to My Mac is already absent in the first beta version of the macOS Mojave operating system. But only a fraction of users noticed it, which proves how little the service is currently used. The official version of the macOS Mojave operating system with a lot of new features, such as Dark Mode or Stacks, will be available to the public this fall.
