On the occasion of the traditional September keynote, Apple presented a number of interesting novelties. In addition to the new iPhone 14 (Pro) series, we received a trio of new watches - Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Ultra - and AirPods Pro 2nd generation headphones. But now we'll shine a light on the new watches, namely the Series 8 and Ultra. The new Apple Watch Ultra is promoted by Apple as the best Apple watch to date, aimed at the most demanding users.

Let's therefore shed some light on the differences between the Apple Watch Series 8 and the Apple Watch Ultra together and say how the Ultra is better than the standard model. We can find quite a few differences and we have to admit in advance that the new professional Apple Watch is literally packed with technology.

What Apple Watch Ultra is leading in

Before we get into what makes the Apple Watch Ultra clearly better, it's worth mentioning one rather important difference, which is the price. The basic Apple Watch Series 8 starts at 12 CZK (with a 490 mm case) and 41 CZK (with a 13 mm case), or you can pay extra for a Cellular connection for another 390 thousand crowns. Subsequently, more expensive variants are offered, the housing of which is made of stainless steel instead of aluminum. On the other hand, the Apple Watch Ultra is available for 45 CZK, i.e. practically double the price of the basic Series 3.

However, the higher price is justified. The Apple Watch Ultra offers a 49mm case size and even already has GPS + Cellular connectivity. In addition, the GPS itself is significantly improved in this case and can provide much better results, thanks to the combination of L1 + L5 GPS. The basic Apple Watch Series 8 relies only on L1 GPS. A fundamental difference can also be found in the material of the case. As we mentioned above, standard watches rely on aluminum or stainless steel, while the Ultra model is made of titanium to ensure maximum durability. Even the display itself is better, reaching twice the luminosity, i.e. up to 2000 nits.

We would find other differences, for example, in water resistance, which is understandable given the focus of the product. The Apple Watch Ultra is aimed at the most demanding users who go for adrenaline sports. We could also include diving here, which is why the Ultra model has resistance up to a depth of 100 meters (Series 8 only 50 meters). In this regard, we must also not forget to mention the interesting functions for automatic detection of diving, during which the watch simultaneously informs about the depth of the dive and the temperature of the water. For safety reasons, they are also equipped with a special warning siren (up to 86 dB).

The Apple Watch Ultra also clearly wins in battery life. Given their purpose, such a thing is of course understandable. While all previous Apple Watches (including the Series 8) have a battery life of up to 18 hours per charge, in the case of the Ultra model, Apple takes it one level further and doubles the value. The Apple Watch Ultra therefore offers up to 36 hours of battery life. To make matters worse, the battery life can be extended even further by activating the low power mode. In this case, it can climb up to an incredible 60 hours, which is completely unique in the world of Apple watches.

Design

Even the design of the watch itself has been adapted to the most demanding conditions. Although Apple is based on the current Series 8 series, we still find various differences, which mainly consist in the larger size of the case and the titanium used. At the same time, the Apple Watch Ultra has a flat display. This is a fairly fundamental difference, as we are used to slightly rounded edges from previous watches, including the mentioned Series 8. The buttons are also visibly different. On the right side there is a redesigned digital crown together with the power button, while on the left side we find a new action button to quickly launch a pre-selected function and a speaker.

The strap itself is also related to the design of the watch. Apple paid a lot of attention to this during the presentation, because for the new Apple Watch Ultra it developed a brand new Alpine movement, which was specially designed for the most demanding users, in the most demanding conditions. On the other hand, even the Ultra model is compatible with other straps. But you have to be careful in this regard - not every previous strap is compatible.
