Alongside the new iPhone 14 (Pro) series, Apple unveiled the brand new Apple Watch Ultra. These are mainly intended for professionals. After all, that's why it boasts significantly better durability, exclusive functions and a number of other advantages that make it the best smartwatch Apple has ever created.

However, an interesting discussion regarding water resistance has opened up. Apple directly provides two different data on its website. First of all, it entices visitors with its water resistance of up to 100 meters, while below it states in smaller print that the watch should not be used at depths greater than 40 meters. It is therefore not surprising that these differences opened up a rather interesting discussion among apple growers. In this article, we will therefore shed light on the water resistance of the Apple Watch Ultra together and focus on why Apple actually provides two different figures.

Water resistance

As we mentioned above, Apple claims that the Apple Watch Ultra is water resistant to a depth of 100 meters. The smart watch is proud of the ISO 22810:2010 certification, during which immersion testing takes place to this depth. However, it is necessary to take into account one rather important thing - the testing takes place in laboratory conditions, whereas in classical diving the results can be significantly different. Additionally, testing is only done for immersion. After all, for this reason, a significantly stricter certification was created directly reserved for watches intended for diving - ISO 6425 - which tests the pressure during immersion to 125% of the declared depth (if the manufacturer declares a resistance of 100 meters, the watch is tested to a depth of 125 meters), decompression , corrosion resistance and others. However, the Apple Watch Ultra does not meet this certification and therefore cannot be considered a diving watch.

Apple itself states that the Apple Watch Ultra is the only one that can be used for diving or water sports - although the Apple Watch Series 2 and later boast resistance to a depth of up to 50 meters according to the ISO 22810:2010 standard, they are not intended for diving and similar activities anyway , only for swimming, for example. But here we come across a rather important piece of information. The brand new Ultra model can only be used for submersion up to 40 meters. This data is the most important for us and we should follow them. Although the watch can deal with and withstand the pressure of greater depth, you should never get into such situations. It can simply be said that this is not strictly a diving watch. In addition, as already mentioned, they were tested according to the ISO 22810:2010 standard, which is not as strict as ISO 6425. In real use, it is therefore necessary to respect the given 40m limitation.

In the case of all smart watches, it is extremely important to pay attention to the declared water resistance. It is always necessary to take into account specific activities, or what the watch is really resistant against. Although, for example, the Apple Watch Series 8 promises resistance to pressure when submerged up to 50 meters, this does not mean that it can really cope with something like this. This model is clearly resistant to water during swimming, showering, rain and similar activities, while it is not intended for diving at all. At the same time, laboratory testing differs greatly from real use in practice.
