The introduction of the new iPhones and Apple Watch is slowly knocking on the door. We should expect new generations in less than a month, and according to a number of leaks and speculations, quite interesting news awaits us. Recently, at the same time, a rather interesting discussion about apple watches opened up among apple watchers. Apparently, we should expect three models instead of one.

Namely, it is supposed to be the traditional Apple Watch Series 8, which will be supplemented by the second generation Apple Watch SE and the brand new Apple Watch Pro model, aimed at demanding athletes. But let's leave the Apple Watch Pro aside for now and focus on the differences between the standard and the cheaper model. Apparently, we will see quite interesting differences.

Apple WatchSE

The Apple Watch SE was first shown to the world in 2020, when Apple unveiled it alongside the Apple Watch Series 6. It is a slightly lighter version that, for a change, is available at a significantly lower price. Although it may not be equipped with some features, it still offers a solid core, a decent design and a wide range of options, which makes these "Watches" a perfect model in the price/performance ratio. The first generation differed from the Series 6 in only a few ways. It did not offer Always-on display and ECG measurement. But when we think about it, these are the options that a large group of users don't even need, which makes this model an ideal partner.

Apple Watch Series 8 vs. Apple Watch SE 2

Now let's move on to the essentials, i.e. what differences we can expect from Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE 2. The differences this time will not only be found in the case of functions, but quite possibly also in the overall appearance and design. So let's see what we can actually expect from these models.

Design

There is not much talk about the possible design of the Apple Watch Series 8. It's possible that leakers and analysts are more cautious about this topic because of last year's fiasco. Several sources were sure of a fairly fundamental change in the design of the previous generation Series 7, which was supposed to come with sharp edges. But none of that came true. It is therefore a question of whether we will see such changes this time, or whether Apple will bet on the classics and stick to the old ways. In general, however, we can rather expect the second variant – the same design with the same case sizes (41 mm and 45 mm).

The Apple Watch SE 2 will probably be practically the same. According to available information, Apple is not planning any change for them. Accordingly, the cheaper Apple Watch will keep the same shape, as well as the same case size (40 mm and 44 mm). In the case of this version, however, there is a lot of speculation about possible changes to the display. As we mentioned above, the first generation lacked the so-called Always-on display. In the case of the successor, we could wait for this very trick.

Sensors

Of course, the core of the Apple Watch itself is its sensors, or the data it can sense and collect. The popular Apple Watch Series 7 therefore has a number of great gadgets and, in addition to detailed monitoring of physical activities and sleep, it can also measure ECG, blood oxygen saturation and a number of other features. The new generation could bring with it another similar gadget. The most common talk is the arrival of a sensor for measuring body temperature, thanks to which the watch would automatically warn its user of a possible increased temperature and recommend a control measurement with a certified thermometer. Among the speculations, however, there are also frequent mentions of possible sleep apnea detection, car accident detection and overall improvement in activity measurement.

Apple Watch SE 2, on the other hand, is not being talked about that much. The leaks only mention that in the case of this model, we will not see the aforementioned sensor for measuring body temperature - it should remain exclusive to the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Pro. Unfortunately, more information does not revolve around the SE 2nd generation. In any case, it can be concluded that if Apple does not plan to gift its cheaper generation with the latest sensor, then it is quite possible that it should at least incorporate older technology. With this, we could expect the possibility to measure the oxygen saturation in the blood, at least a sensor for measuring the ECG.

Price

The price of the Apple Watch Series 8 should start at the same amount as the previous generation. In such a case, the new series should start at CZK 10, or increase the amount depending on the size of the case, its material or according to the straps.

The same will probably be the case with the cheaper Apple Watch SE 2. They should still keep the same starting price tag, starting at CZK 7. But what is more interesting is that with their arrival, the older Apple Watch Series 990, which Apple still sells today, will almost certainly disappear from sale. Together with the newly introduced Apple Watch, we will see the release of the expected operating systems for the public, while the upcoming watchOS 3 no longer supports the Watch Series 9. Unless Apple decides to make other changes, the Apple Watch SE 3 will become the cheapest available watch in the Apple range.
