The Apple Watch smart watch has been with us since 2015. During its existence, we have seen a significant amount of completely fundamental improvements and changes that have moved the product as such several steps forward. Today's Apple Watch is therefore not only a great partner for displaying notifications, incoming calls or for monitoring sports performance, but also serves a fundamental purpose in terms of monitoring the user's health. It is in this segment that Apple has made huge strides forward.

For example, such Apple Watch Series 8 can therefore easily measure the heart rate, possibly warn of an irregular rhythm, measure the ECG, blood oxygen saturation, body temperature or automatically detect falls and car accidents. It is not for nothing that it is said that the Apple Watch has become a device with the potential to save human lives. But their potential as such is much more extensive.

A study examining the Apple Watch

If you are among the fans of the apple company and are interested in what's going on around you, then you certainly haven't missed the news regarding the potential usability of the Apple Watch. In recent years, a number of health studies have appeared, in the vast majority, which describe the significantly better usability of apple watches. We could register a lot of such reports during the global pandemic of the Covid-19 disease, when researchers were trying to figure out whether the Apple Watch can be used to record the symptoms of the disease earlier. Of course, it doesn't end there. Now another interesting study has swept through the apple growing community. According to them, apple watches could significantly help people suffering from sickle cell anemia or people with a speech impediment.

The study was conducted at Duke University in the United States. According to the results, the Apple Watch could significantly help with the treatment of vaso-occlusive crises, which is a key complication caused by the aforementioned sickle cell anemia. Very briefly, the watch itself could discover trends through the collected health data and predict pain in people suffering from the disease. They could thus receive a warning signal in time, which will significantly simplify early treatment. It should also be mentioned that the results of the study were achieved through the Apple Watch Series 3. Therefore, when we take into account the maturity of today's models, it can be assumed that their potential is even higher.

Apple Watch Potential

Above we have mentioned only a fraction of what the Apple Watch is theoretically capable of. As we have already mentioned above, there are several such studies, where doctors and researchers examine their usability and constantly push the potential limit of possibilities. This gives Apple an extremely powerful weapon. Because they hold in their hands a device with a huge potential to save human lives. An important question therefore arises in this direction. Why doesn't Apple directly implement options that could alert patients to potential problems in time? If the studies show positive results, what is Apple waiting for?

Apple Watch fb heart rate measurement

Unfortunately, it is not quite so simple in this direction. First of all, it is necessary to realize that the Apple Watch as such is not a medical device - it is still "only" a smart watch, with the exception that it has a slightly higher potential. If Apple wanted to natively integrate functions and options based on studies, it would have to deal with a number of legal problems and with finding the necessary certifications, which brings us back to the very beginning. The Apple Watch is only an accessory, whereas the patients in the mentioned studies were under the supervision of real doctors and other experts. Apple watches can therefore be a valuable helper, but within certain limits. Therefore, before we see such fundamental improvements, we will have to wait for another Friday, especially considering the complexity of the whole situation.
