In recent days, Apple has been granted a patent that solves the security of displayed products in stores in an interesting way. To a certain extent, this could be a solution that will significantly reduce incidents during which the products on display are stolen, which is a relatively big problem, especially in the case of Apple, given the nature of Apple Stores.

Apple is currently struggling with increasingly frequent theft of products from official stores. Due to their design, theft of displayed goods is not too problematic. That could change in the future, as a newly granted patent suggests.

It describes a rather complex security system that should thoroughly monitor all displayed electronic products in the store. These should be connected to a multi-level network that would serve several different purposes. A connected device within the network should be able to detect its movement and in case of unexpected (or unplanned) movement, it should inform the relevant employee who would be in charge of showroom control. For example, as soon as the iPhone left its designated place, it would be immediately tracked.

If a would-be shoplifter were to try to take the merchandise out of the store, the network would register it and several things could happen. First of all, a notification could appear on the device's display that the device is leaving its assigned location. Once the store boundary was crossed, the device could be locked and the contact information of the return point displayed on the display. A device locked in this way would be practically unusable. In addition, special software installed in the devices could detect theft (leaving the home network) and report their ongoing location to tracking software using GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth.

This patent was submitted to the US Patent Office in the first quarter of this year. It's very possible that the company is working on similar tools, given how the number of thefts from Apple Stores is increasing. A similar solution should discourage potential thieves, as they would take a practically non-functional piece of hardware from the store, which would be suitable for spare parts at most.
