Following on from yesterday's release of iOS 12.1.1, macOS 10.14.2 and tvOS 12.1.1, today Apple also sends the expected watchOS 5.1.2 to the world. The new system is available to all owners of a compatible Apple Watch and brings a number of interesting innovations. The biggest one is the promised support for ECG measurement on the latest Series 4 model, which the company presented at the keynote in September.

You can update your Apple Watch in the app Watch on the iPhone, where in the section My watch just go to In general -> Software update. The size of the installation package is around 130 MB, it depends on the specific model of the watch. In order to see the update, you need to have an iPhone updated to the new iOS 12.1.1.

The most significant new feature of watchOS 5.1.2 is the ECG app on the Apple Watch Series 4. The new native app will show the user if their heart rhythm is showing signs of arrhythmia. The Apple Watch is thus able to determine atrial fibrillation or more serious forms of irregular heart rhythm. To measure the ECG, the user must place a finger on the crown of the watch for 30 seconds while wearing it on the wrist. During the measurement process, an electrocardiogram is displayed on the display, and the software then determines from the results whether the heart is showing arrhythmia or not.

The feature is currently only available in the United States, where Apple has received the necessary approval from the Food and Drug Administration. However, ECG measurements are supported by all Apple Watch Series 4 models sold worldwide. If, for example, a user from the Czech Republic changes the region in the phone and watch settings to the United States, he can try out the new function. (Update: The watch must be from the US market for the ECG measurement app to appear after changing the region)

Even owners of older Apple Watch models can enjoy several new functions after the update to watchOS 5.1.2. All Apple Watches since Series 1 are now capable of notifying the user of an irregular heart rhythm. The update also brings a new toggle to the Control Center for the Walkie-Talkie feature. Thanks to this, it is possible to easily control whether you are on reception in the Radio or not. Until now, it was necessary to always switch your status in the aforementioned application.

watchOS 5.1.2 also brings a few new complications to the Infograph watch faces on the Apple Watch Series 4. Specifically, shortcuts can now be added for the Phone, Messages, Mail, Maps, Find Friends, Driver, and Home apps.
