If your Mac is running on OS X Yosemite, Mavericks or Mountain Lion, you should launch the Mac App Store as soon as possible and download the security patch (security update), which is automatically offered to you in the tab Updates. Apple itself encourages you to update as soon as possible.

The vulnerability is located in the Network Time Protocol daemon (ntpd). It allows an attacker to remotely cause a stack overflow, which can allow them to run malicious code on a given Mac. You can check your ntpd version in Terminal with the following command:

what / usr / sbin / ntpd

After installing the update, you should see these versions:

  • Mountain Lion: ntp–77.1.1
  • Mavericks: ntp–88.1.1
  • Yosemite: ntp–92.5.1
