On the occasion of yesterday's developer conference WWDC 2022, Apple showed us a number of rather interesting novelties. As usual, we were expecting the unveiling of new versions of operating systems, as well as the redesigned MacBook Air and 13″ MacBook Pro. Of course, iOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura managed to get the imaginary spotlight. However, what Apple completely forgot about was the tvOS 16 system, which the giant did not mention at all.

The tvOS operating system has been on the back burner in recent years and has not received much attention. But in the final there is nothing to be surprised about. The system only powers the Apple TV and is not that essential in itself. Simply put, iOS can't be equal in any way. On the contrary, it is a simpler OS for managing the aforementioned Apple TV. Anyway, we still got some improvements for tvOS 16, although unfortunately there aren't twice as many of them.

tvOS 16 news

If we look at the mentioned iOS and macOS systems and compare their simultaneously introduced versions with those we worked with, for example, four years ago, we find a number of interesting differences. At first glance, you can see an interesting forward development, a number of new functions and overall simplification for users. In the case of tvOS, however, such a thing no longer applies at all. Comparing today's version with the previous ones, we practically do not find any real changes, and rather it looks like Apple is completely forgetting about its system for Apple TV. Despite this, we did receive some news. But only one question remains. Is this the news we've come to expect from tvOS?

The first developer beta version of tvOS revealed a few changes. Rather than new functions, however, we received improvements to existing ones. The system is supposed to be smarter about connecting with the rest of the ecosystem and bring better support for the smart home (including support for the new Matter framework) and Bluetooth game controllers. The Metal 3 graphics API should improve as well.

Bad times for Apple TV

Yesterday's keynote convinced many Apple fans of one thing - the Apple TV is literally disappearing before our eyes and the day will soon come when it will end just like the iPod touch. After all, changes in the tvOS system over the last few years indicate this. Compared to other systems, in this case we are not moving anywhere, nor are we getting new interesting functions. There are therefore many question marks hanging over the future of Apple TV, and the question is whether the product can sustain itself, or in which direction it will continue to develop.
