The global smartphone market is a living organism, which has been greatly disrupted by the coronavirus era, in which tablets have seen growth, but phones, on the other hand, have declined. Although the smartphone market grew by 2% between Q3 and Q2021 6, it fell by 6% year-on-year. 342 million units of phones sold in three months is still a nice number. Who sold the most, and who made the most money from them? These are two different numbers.

So who is the global leader in mobile phone sales? Samsung is celebrating great success in sales of its folding models Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3, as well as other smartphones, which is why it holds the first place in the market share, with 20%. The second is Apple with its iPhones, which have a 14% share, but it is closely followed by the growing Xiaomi, which has a 13% market share. The situation changed quite a bit during 2021, because even though Apple had a 1% share in Q2021 17 and Xiaomi 14%, in Q2 this brand overtook Apple by a percentage. Samsung's share also changed, to which 1% of the market belonged in Q2021 22.

Results for the fourth quarter of 2021, which includes a strong Christmas season, are eagerly awaited. Here, one would expect Apple to be the strongest, which took 4% of the market in Q2020 21, when Samsung only had a 16% share and Xiaomi an 11% share. Apple plans to publish holiday earnings for Q4 2021, or for fiscal Q1 2022, on January 27. However, the situation is also tense on the fourth and fifth ranks of the smartphone sales list, where the same 10% are occupied by the vivo and OPPO brands.

Samsung will sell more but earn less

According to a company survey Counterpoint Samsung sold 69,3 million of its smartphones, while Apple delivered 48 million iPhones to customers. These are estimated dates, as Apple does not officially disclose them. Anyway, anyway published, that revenue from this segment was $3 billion in Q2021 38,87. In contrast, Samsung in its own the press release states, that its revenue from the segment was KRW 28,42 trillion, or about $23 billion.

So, as you can see, although Samsung sells more, it has lower sales. And it's logical, because its portfolio covers the entire segment of mobile phones, while Apple's price is aimed at the middle (SE models and iPhone 11) and the highest segment. In addition, Samsung is now relatively at an advantage, as already on February 9 it should present its flagship smartphone line for the year, namely the trio of Galaxy S22 phones. Apple will not introduce the new generation of iPhones until the fall, although there is speculation about the spring launch of the iPhone SE 3rd generation. But in the summer, the arrival of new Samsung puzzles is expected again, to which Apple does not yet know how, or rather, what to react.
