Apple has released its annual environmental report, in which it focuses, among other things, on how much it can reuse from older devices. The Californian company also writes about alternative energy consumption and safer materials.

A big step in environmental protection which Lisa Jackson also demonstrated during the last keynote, Apple's vice president of these affairs, is improving recycling.

From old devices such as computers and iPhones, Apple was able to collect over 27 thousand tons of steel, aluminum, glass and other materials, including almost a ton of gold. At current prices, the gold alone is worth $40 million. In total, the collected material is worth ten million dollars more.

According to organization Fairphone there are 30 milligrams of gold in every average smartphone, which is mainly used in circuits and other internal components. This is where Apple gets its gold from recycling, and because it does so for a million iPhones and other products, it gets that much.

Thanks to its recycling programs, Apple received almost 41 thousand tons of electronic waste, which is 71 percent of the weight of the products that the company sold seven years ago. In addition to the above-mentioned materials, Apple also obtains copper, cobalt, nickel, lead, zinc, tin and silver during recycling.
