iOS 16 almost immediately managed to win the favor of apple lovers themselves, thanks to a number of useful novelties. When presenting the new systems at WWDC 2022, Apple showed us a completely redesigned lock screen, great changes for native Messages (iMessage) and Mail, more security with Passkeys, better dictation and a fairly significant shift in focus modes.

Focus modes entered Apple operating systems only last year with the arrival of iOS 15 and macOS 12 Monterey. Although apple users liked them relatively quickly, there is still something missing in them, which Apple also focused on this time and announced a number of long-awaited changes. In this article, we will therefore focus together on all the news related to concentration and look at how they work.

Interfacing with the lock screen

A fairly major improvement is the integration of focus mode with the redesigned lock screen. This is because the lock screen can change based on the activated mode, which can greatly boost productivity and generally move the user forward. Both innovations are simply interconnected and generally make the work of apple growers easier.

We must also not forget to mention the suggestions that the system itself will arrange for us. Based on the active mode, it can project related data on the lock screen. For example, in work mode it will display the most necessary information, which is good to keep in sight at all times, while in personal mode it will only display a photo.

Surface designs and filter settings

As with the designs for the lock screen, iOS will try to help us with classic desktops and what they actually display. Here we can include individual applications and widgets. These should then be displayed with maximum relevance to the given activity, or to the active mode of concentration. For example, for work, apps will be displayed primarily with a work focus.

The ability to set filters is also easily related to this. Specifically, we will be able to literally set boundaries for various applications such as Calendar, Mail, Messages or Safari, again for each individual concentration mode we work with. In practice, it will work quite simply. We can show it especially on the Calendar. For example, when the work mode is activated, only the work calendar will be displayed, while the personal or family calendar will be hidden at that moment or vice versa. Of course, the same is true in Safari, where a relevant group of panels can be immediately offered to us.

Settings of enabled/muted contacts

In the iOS 15 operating system, we can set which contacts can contact us in the focus modes. These options will expand with the arrival of iOS 16, but now from the completely opposite side. We will now be able to set a list of so-called muted contacts. These people will then not be able to contact us when the given mode is activated.

Easier setup and openness

However, the most important innovation will be the significantly simpler setting of the modes themselves. Already in iOS 15, it was a rather great gadget, which unfortunately failed due to the fact that many users simply did not set it up or did not adjust it according to their own needs. So Apple has promised to improve this problem and simplify the overall setup itself.

Great news for us Apple users is the integration of the Focus Filter API into iOS 16. Thanks to this, even developers can use the entire system of focus modes and incorporate their support into their own applications. They can then recognize which mode you have active and possibly continue to work with the given information. In the same way, there will also be an option to automatically turn on the given modes based on time, location or application.
