As the testing of the upcoming iOS 12.2 continues, testers are coming up with more and more news that we will see in the next few weeks. Today, information appeared on the web that Apple has completely changed the format used for audio recordings that users can send as voice messages via iMessage in this version of iOS. The new files are much better quality.

According to file parsing, Apple is now using the Opus codec coded at 24 Hz for voice messages. This is a huge difference from the previously used AMR codec, which was only encoded at 000 Hz. The new audio recording format will be supported on devices running iOS 8 or macOS 000.

A change in codec is logically linked to a change in file size. According to testing, the size of the new recording will increase approximately six times, but we are still moving in negligible values of a few (dozens) of KB. However, the difference in sound quality is quite clear at the first listen, viz. Tweet below.

The new recording has far more depth and better legibility. The recorded message is thus much easier to understand. So if you're using the audio messaging feature, you'll be hearing much better after the upcoming update. It was the quality of the audio recordings in the messages that was a frequent point of criticism from users, especially compared to a similar service in the WhatsApp application, where the audio recordings were of much better quality.
