Last week, we informed you about a fairly important news that absolutely no one expected from Apple. Due to the Biden administration in the United States of America, which has recently been increasingly pushing the Right to Repair initiative, or the right to repair your own electronics, the giant has decided to go with the flow rather than fight it, as it has been doing so far. At the beginning of 2022, the Self Service Repair program will start in the USA, when it will provide apple growers not only with original spare parts, but also with the necessary manuals and tools. But will there be any interest in the service? Quite possibly not.

Presentation of service or great joy

When the Cupertino giant revealed the arrival of this service through a press release in its Newsroom, it managed to shock practically the entire world. At the same time, the joy was shared not only by home DIYers, who like to handle various repairs themselves, but also by unauthorized service providers and others. As we mentioned above, Apple is simply coming up with something that it has been fighting against until now. For example, when replacing the battery or display, annoying messages about the impossibility of verifying the given component began to appear on the phones. This change in approach is so downright genius.

Although there was a huge uproar around the performance and the apple lovers praised such a change, one question still arises. Will there actually be interest in something similar, or will Apple please only a minority group of users in this regard? For now, it looks like the Self Service Repair program will leave most Apple owners cold.

Most people will not use the service

Although the Czechs are a nation of do-it-yourselfers and we prefer to deal with most activities ourselves, it is necessary to look at the new Self Service Repair program globally. But the most important factor remains one - iPhones simply work and there is no need to interfere with them (in the vast majority of cases). The only exception is the battery. But will Apple owners be willing to first purchase an original battery, get tools and then lose their minds over the replacement itself, aware of all the risks? This activity is not even completely expensive, and most people simply prefer to reach for a service, which can also deal with the replacement practically while waiting.

After all, this is multiplied even more in the case of more demanding repairs, for example when replacing the display. This is an activity that can damage your entire phone, which is why it is much easier to hand it over to experts rather than risk further damage. In addition, the program will first start in the United States, where it can be expected that it will not be very popular. Of course, it will be welcomed with open arms by the already mentioned services and home repairmen, but it will leave most users completely calm.

It is currently unclear when Self Service Repair will arrive in other countries, or rather in the Czech Republic. Apple only mentioned that the program from the United States will expand to other countries in the course of 2022. As such, the Czech Republic is a nation of do-it-yourselfers, so it can be expected that interest in the service should be significantly higher here. But this does not speak of potential popularity in our territory. Price will probably be the deciding factor. For example, a non-original battery does not always have to be the worst, and many people were able to be satisfied with the so-called secondary production. Whether the original parts from Apple will be significantly more expensive than the unofficial ones, then we are clear - most prefer to reach for the cheaper version.

The service will first launch in the United States, where Apple will cover the needs of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. Later in the year, it will expand to include parts and manuals for Macs with the M1 chip. The program will visit other, but unspecified, countries in the course of 2022.
