After Apple lost a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice over a settlement with book publishers where Apple formed a cartel to raise the price of books, it was assigned oversight to make sure the company followed the court's order and did not engage in similar tactics elsewhere. This supervision is supposed to last for two years, however, after the first two weeks, Apple filed a complaint in federal court.

He did so after receiving the first invoice, as Apple is obliged to cover the costs associated with surveillance. Michael Bromwich and his five-member team claimed $138 in the first two weeks, which translates to almost 432 million crowns, and the hourly fee then comes to $2,8 (CZK 1). By comparison, the average American monthly salary is under $100.

According to Apple, this is the highest salary they have ever had to pay, and Michael Bromwich is said to be taking advantage of the fact that he has virtually no competition here. On top of that, it also charges a 15% administration fee, which Apple says is unheard of and shouldn't be eligible. But that's not the only thing that bothers California companies. Bromwich is also said to be demanding meetings with Tim Cook and chairman Al Gore, i.e. the top brass, right from the start. Apple also resents that Judge Denise Cote suggested that Bromwich be allowed to meet with company employees without their lawyers present.

Although for a company that is currently worth over half a trillion dollars on Wall Street, the salary for an oversight firm seems negligible, the amount is really inflated from the point of view of an ordinary mortal. Although the best American law firms claim up to $1 an hour, in this case it is far from building a defense or a charge, but only supervision. Whether the salary is overstated, however, will have to be decided by a US federal court.
