MagSafe has been one of the most popular components of Apple computers for many years. Specifically, it is a magnetic power connector, to which the cable just needs to be clipped, which automatically initializes the power supply. In addition to this comfort, it also brings with it another benefit in the form of safety - if someone trips over the cable, luckily (mostly) they won't take the entire laptop with them, because the cable simply "snaps" out of the connector. MagSafe even saw a second generation, but in 2016 it suddenly disappeared completely.

But as it stands, Apple has completely changed the approach and is now giving it wherever possible. It first appeared in the case of the iPhone 12, but in a slightly different form. The new iPhones have a series of magnets on the back, which enable the connection of a "wireless" MagSafe charger, while also serving for easier attachment of accessories in the form of covers or wallets. At the end of 2021, MagSafe also experienced its return to the Mac family, specifically to the redesigned 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro, which generally saw a significant design change, the return of some ports and the first professional Apple Silicon chips. Now it is even a newer generation labeled MagSafe 3, which even enables fast charging with a power of up to 140 W. Similar to the iPhone 12, the charging case for AirPods Pro headphones also received MagSafe support. So it can be charged with the same MagSafe charger as newer Apple phones.

The future of power for Apple products

As it seems, Apple is trying to get rid of the classic physical connectors into which the cable has to be inserted. In the case of iPhones and AirPods, it is slowly replacing Lightning, in the case of Macs it is a replacement for USB-C, which will most likely remain for other purposes, and it can still be used for power delivery via Power Delivery. According to the current steps taken by the Californian company, it can be clearly concluded that the giant sees a future in MagSafe and is trying to push it further. This is also confirmed by reports that some iPads will soon receive MagSafe support.

So an interesting question arises. Are we saying goodbye to Lightning soon? For now, it seems more likely not. MagSafe is only used for power supply, while the Lightning connector is also adapted for possible synchronization. It can be used, for example, to connect an iPhone to a Mac and back it up. Unfortunately, MagSafe does not provide us with that yet. On the other hand, it is not impossible that we will see this in the future. But we'll just have to wait for some Friday for any changes.
