When Apple introduced the new iPhone 2016 in September 7, it managed to outrage a fairly large percentage of fans. It was the first to get rid of the iconic 3,5 mm jack connector for connecting headphones. Since then, Apple users have had to rely on an adapter if they want to connect, for example, classic wired headphones. Of course, it is very clear why the giant decided to take this step. Along with the iPhone 7, the very first AirPods also took the floor. By simply removing the jack and arguing that it is an outdated connector, Apple wanted to boost sales of its wireless Apple headphones.

Since then, Apple has continued in this direction - removing the 3,5 mm connector from practically all mobile devices. Its definitive end has now come with the arrival of the iPad (2022). For a long time, the basic iPad was the last device with a 3,5 mm jack connector. Unfortunately, this is now changing, as the aforementioned redesigned iPad 10th generation has been introduced to the world, which, among other things, brings a new design modeled after the iPad Air, gets rid of the home button and replaces the Lightning connector with the popular and globally widespread USB-C.

Is this a step in the right direction?

On the other hand, we have to admit that Apple is not the only one who slowly got rid of the 3,5 mm jack connector. For example, newer Samsung Galaxy S phones and many others are practically the same. But even so, the question arises whether Apple has taken a step in the right direction in the case of the iPad (2022). There are certain doubts on the part of the users themselves. Basic iPads are widespread for the needs of education, where it is much easier for students to work in combination with traditional wired headphones. On the contrary, it is precisely in this segment that the use of wireless headphones does not make so much sense, which can lead to certain problems.

It is therefore a question whether this change will really affect education or not. An alternative is also the use of the already mentioned adapter - namely USB-C to 3,5 mm jack - with which this ailment could theoretically be solved. Moreover, the reduction is not even expensive, it costs only 290 CZK. On the other hand, schools in such a case will not need one adapter, but quite a few dozens, when the price can be expensive and in the end, exceed the amount you would leave for the tablet itself.

Obsolete for iPhones/iPads, future for Macs

At the same time, we can dwell on one point of interest. While in the case of iPhones and iPads, Apple argues that the 3,5 mm jack connector is obsolete and there is no point in continuing to use it, Macs take a different approach. Clear proof is the redesigned 14″/16″ MacBook Pro (2021). In addition to professional Apple Silicon chips, a new design, a better display, and the return of connectors, it also saw the arrival of a newer 3,5 mm jack connector with support for high-impedance headphones. So it is clear that in this case Apple is trying to bring support for higher quality models from companies like Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic, which will offer even better sound.
