As part of WWDC, Apple extended the surround sound function to the FaceTime or Apple TV platform. However, it can be seen that he is interested in this topic and that he sees greater potential in it. Thanks to the new option in iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS 12 Monterey "Spatialize Stereo", these systems can simulate Spatial Audio for content that is not actually spatial.

Spatial Audio was announced last year as part of iOS 14 as a feature that brings more immersive sound to AirPods Pro and now AirPods Max users. It uses the recorded Dolby technology to simulate 360-degree sound with a spatial experience that "moves" as the user moves their head.

Some movies and TV shows on Apple TV+ are already Spatial Audio compatible because they have content available in Dolby Atmos. But there is still less of it rather than more, which is why the Spatialize Stereo function comes to simulate it. While this won't give you the full 3D experience that Dolby offers, it does a fairly good job of simulating sound coming from different directions when you move your head with the AirPods on.

You can find Spatialize Stereo in the Control Center

To activate Spatialize Stereo in iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey, just connect AirPods Pro or AirPods Max and start playing any content. Then go to Control Center, press and hold the volume slider and you will see a new option there. However, Spatialize Stereo has the disadvantage that it doesn't (yet) work with apps that have their own player - typically YouTube. Even if, for example, Spotify is supported, for others you have to use the web interface of the application.
