Although Apple the day before yesterday reported the largest profits in the third fiscal quarter of all time and the value of the company has come very close to the magical value of a trillion dollars, the Californian company has now suffered one defeat. It lost its position as the second largest smartphone seller, as it was recently overtaken by the Chinese Huawei.

"Huawei's arrival in the second position marks the first quarter since 2010 when Apple is neither number one nor number two in the smartphone market,”  IDC said in a press release.

54 million smartphones sold

According to data from IDC, Canalys and Strategy Analytics, the Chinese company's sales in the second quarter grew by 41 percent year-on-year and managed to report 54 million smartphones. Apple sold 41 million iPhones in the same period, and South Korea's Samsung remains the market leader with 71 million, which, however, is roughly a ten percent drop compared to last year.

Huawei has been bragging about its goal of becoming the world's number two smartphone brand for a long time. The main credit for the 40 percent year-on-year growth goes to the company's Honor brand, which, according to IDC, is "a key driving force for the growth of the Chinese giant." The P20 and P20 Pro phones also excelled in sales.

Samsung 21%, Huawei 16%, Apple 12%

In China, Huawei had the largest market share in the second quarter with 27 percent. On a global scale, Samsung wins with 20,9 percent, followed by Huawei with 15,8 percent, and then Apple with 12,1 percent. However, given that Apple usually presents its new models in September, and iPhone sales are weaker every year from April to June, it is possible that Huawei will not warm up in second place for long. It will be interesting to watch the further development of the smartphone market, especially since Samsung is expected to introduce the new Galaxy Note 9 in August and three new iPhones may come in September. We will see in the coming quarters whether Huawei will hold on to the second place and whether it will attack the first place as well.
