Apple already boasted at last year's WWDC that consumers will soon see routers compatible with the HomeKit platform. At the end of last week, the company released a support document in which we can find more details about this functionality. The compatibility of the router with the HomeKit platform will bring a number of improvements for the operation and security of connected elements of smart homes, but one inconvenience will be associated with the relevant settings.

In the mentioned document, Apple describes, for example, the security levels that you will be able to set for the elements of your smart home thanks to routers with HomeKit compatibility. But it also explains how the basic setup will take place. Before users can start using their router, all HomeKit-compatible accessories connected to the home via Wi-Fi will need to be removed, reset, and added back to HomeKit. According to Apple, this is the only way to ensure a truly secure connection for the respective accessories. However, in households with complex and more intricately interconnected smart equipment, this step can be really time-consuming and technically demanding. After removing and re-pairing the given accessories, it will be necessary to re-name the individual elements, repeat the original settings and adapt the scenes and automations.

Routers with HomeKit compatibility will offer three different levels of security, according to Apple. The mode, called "Restrict to Home", will allow smart home elements to connect only to the home hub, and will not allow firmware updates. The "Automatic" mode, which will be set as the default, will allow the smart home elements to connect to a list of Internet services and local devices specified by the manufacturer. The least secure is the "No Restriction" mode, when the accessory will be able to connect to any Internet service or local device. Routers with HomeKit compatibility are not yet officially available on the market, but several manufacturers have already talked about introducing support for this platform in the past.
