Somewhat unexpectedly and without any prior notice, Apple today stopped selling the 12″ MacBook with Retina display. The laptop has quietly disappeared from the offer on the company's official website, and a big question mark hangs over its future for the time being.

The end of the sale is all the more surprising given that Apple only introduced the 12″ MacBook four years ago, while computers with the bitten apple logo tend to last for decades – the iMac is a perfect example. Of course, the time of stay in the product range is always extended by relevant hardware updates, but the Retina MacBook also received these several times.

It should be noted, however, that the last upgrade the computer earned was in 2017. Since then, its future has been somewhat uncertain, and last year's debut of the completely redesigned MacBook Air, which not only offers better hardware, but above all attracts a lower price tag.

Despite the above, however, the 12″ MacBook had its specific place in Apple's offer and was unique mainly due to its low weight and compact dimensions. After all, due to these features, it was considered the most suitable MacBook for travel. It did not particularly dazzle with performance, but it had its added values, which made it popular with a large group of users.

The future of the 12″ MacBook is uncertain, but all the more interesting

However, the end of sales does not necessarily mean that the 12″ MacBook is finished. It's possible that Apple is just waiting for the right components and didn't want to offer customers a hardware-obsolete computer until they were released (although it didn't have a problem with that in the past). Apple also needs to choose a different price, because next to the MacBook Air, the Retina MacBook basically makes no sense.

Ultimately, the MacBook once again needs to offer a fundamental revolutionary change, and this is probably what Apple is preparing it for. This is a model that is tailor-made to be the first to offer a processor based on the ARM architecture in the future, which Apple plans to switch to for its computers and thus move away from Intel. The future of the 12″ MacBook is all the more interesting because it may become the debut model for the new era. So let's be surprised by what the engineers in Cupertino have in store for us.
