We have known for a long time that we will see new hardware today at WWDC22. When Apple started talking about the M2 chip, all Apple computer lovers had a smile on their faces. And there is nothing to be surprised about, because the transition from Intel to Apple Silicon turned out really well, both for Apple itself and for the users themselves. Let's take a look together in this article at what the new M2 chip has to offer.

The M2 is a brand new chip that kicks off the second generation in the Apple Silicon family. This chip is manufactured using the second generation 5nm manufacturing process and offers 20 billion transistors, which is up to 40% more than the M1 offered. As for memories, they now have a bandwidth of up to 100 GB/s and we will be able to configure up to 24 GB of operating memory.

The CPU was also updated, with 8 cores still available, but of a new generation. Compared to the M1, the CPU in the M2 is thus 18% more powerful. In the case of the GPU, up to 10 cores are available, which is definitely useful. In this regard, the GPU of the M2 chip is up to 38% more powerful than the M1. The CPU is up to 1.9 times more powerful than an ordinary computer, using 1/4 the power consumption. A classic PC thus consumes much more, which means that it heats up more and is not as efficient. The performance of the GPU is then up to 2.3 times higher than that of a classic computer, with 1/5 the energy consumption. The M2 also ensures an absolutely unrivaled battery life, able to cope with 40% more operations than the M1. There is also an updated Media Engine with support for up to 8K ProRes video.
