Alongside the new Apple Watch Series 4, Apple today presented a new generation of its bezel-less smartphone called the iPhone XS at the Steve Jobs Theater. In addition to the successor to last year's model, a version with a larger display, which was given the somewhat unconventional name iPhone XS Max, also made its premiere. In particular, the phones boast a new color variant, a higher maximum storage capacity, more powerful components, an improved camera and several other novelties. In general, however, this is only a slight evolution of last year's model. So let's summarize clearly in points what the new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max bring.

  • The official name of the new model is iPhone XS.
  • The phone will be newly offered in Gold variant, which joins the existing Space Gray and Silver.
  • The smartphone has the most durable glass ever used on a phone. However, it also increased water resistance, for certification IP68, thanks to which it can last up to 30 minutes at a depth of up to 2 meters. So while the back is made of glass, the frame is again made of stainless steel.
  • It remains 5,8-inch Super Retina display with a resolution of 2436 × 1125 at 458 pixels per inch.
  • This year, however, a larger variant was added to the smaller model, which received a label iPhone XS Max. The novelty has 6,5 inch display with a resolution of 2688 × 1242 at 458 pixels per inch. Despite the significantly larger display, it is a new model the same size as the iPhone 8 Plus (even slightly smaller in height and width).
  • Thanks to the larger display, it is possible to use applications more productively in landscape mode. A number of them will support landscape mode, similar to the Plus models.
  • But the display has also received another improvement. He can boast of the new 120 Hz refresh rate.
  • It also offers both new models better (wider) stereo sound.
  • Face ID now it serves a faster algorithm and therefore the authentication itself faster and more reliable.
  • A new processor is ticking in the iPhone XS and XS Max A12 Bionic, which is made with 7-nanometer technology. The chip contains 6,9 billion transistors. The CPU has 6 cores, the GPU has 4 cores, and is up to 50% faster. It is also located in the processor 8-core Neural Engine a new generation that handles 5 trillion operations per second. The processor's Neural Engine handles a number of important functions, making phones noticeably faster. Overall, it has a processor up to 15% faster performance cores a up to 50% lower energy consumption when using energy-saving cores. It also offers an improved video signal processor and a more advanced power controller. According to Apple, the A12 Bionic is the smartest processor ever used in a smartphone.
  • Thanks to the new processor, Apple can offer a new one in the iPhone Xs and Xs Plus 512GB storage variant.
  • The new processor is able to provide real-time machine learning, which brings benefits especially for Camera and Portrait mode.
  • Thanks to the processor, it reaches a new level of usability augmented reality (AR), whose processing is noticeably faster on the iPhone Xs and Xs Max. At the presentation, Apple showed a trio of applications, with HomeCourt being among the most useful. The application can analyze movements, shots, recordings and other aspects of basketball training in real time.
  • Apple has improved again camera. Improved is above all lightning bolt for the rear camera, but also a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens. Apple used new sensor, which guarantees a truer image, more accurate colors and less noise in low-light shots. It also takes better quality photos front camera, mainly thanks to the Neural Engine in the A12 Bionic.
  • iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max boast a new Smart HDR, which can better capture details, shadows and better combine photos into one high-quality image.
  • The Portrait mode has also been improved, as the photos taken in it are of better quality. A big novelty is the ability to adjust the depth of field, i.e. the degree of the bokeh effect. You can edit photos after taking them.
  • Video recording has also been improved. Both phones are capable of using extended dynamic range at up to 30 fps. Sound has also undergone a noticeable shift, as the iPhone XS and XS Max now record in stereo. The front camera can now handle cinematographic stabilization of 1080p or 720p video and shoot 1080p HD video even at 60 fps.
  • The camera parameters otherwise remain the same as last year, even in the case of the iPhone XS Max.
  • The iPhone XS lasts 30 minutes longer than the iPhone X. The larger iPhone XS Max offers 1,5 hours of battery life than last year's model. Fast charging remains. However, wireless charging has accelerated, but only detailed tests will show exactly how much.
  • One of the biggest innovations to conclude: the iPhone XS and XS Max offer a DSDS (Dual SIM Dual Standby) regime – thanks to the eSIM in the phones, it is possible to use two numbers and two different operators. The function will also be supported in the Czech Republic, specifically by T-Mobile. A special Dual-SIM model will then be offered in China.

iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max will be available for pre-order already on Friday, September 14. Sales will then start a week later, on Friday, September 21. In the Czech Republic, however, the novelties will only start to be sold in the second wave, specifically on September 28. Both models will be available in three capacity variants – 64, 256 and 512 GB and in three colors – Space Gray, Silver and Gold. Prices in the US market start at $999 for the smaller model and $1099 for the Max model. We have written the Czech prices in the following article:
