Today, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, appeared in front of journalists at the Yerba Buena Center to introduce the sixth generation of the Apple phone, which is called the iPhone 5. After two and a half years, the expected phone has changed its design and display dimensions, it will be sold from 21st of September.

To be precise, it wasn't Tim Cook who showed the world the new iPhone 5, but Phil Schiller, senior vice president of global marketing, who hadn't even warmed up on stage yet and announced: "Today we're introducing iPhone 5."

As soon as he effectively rotated the new iPhone on the screen, it was clear that the speculations of the previous days had been fulfilled. The iPhone 5 is made entirely of glass and aluminum, with the back being aluminum with glass windows at the top and bottom. After two generations, the iPhone is slightly changing its design again, but from the front it looks practically identical to the iPhone 4/4S. It will again be available in black and white.

However, the iPhone 5 is 18% thinner, at only 7,6 mm. It is also 20% lighter than its predecessor, weighing 112 grams. It features a Retina display with 326 PPI displayed on a brand new four-inch display with a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9. In practice, this means that the iPhone 5 adds one more, a fifth row of icons to the main screen.

At the same time, Apple has optimized all of its applications to take advantage of the new display's proportions. Those applications, i.e. currently the majority in the App Store, which are not yet updated, will be centered on the new iPhone and a black border will be added to the edges. Apple had to figure something out. According to Schiller, the new display is the most accurate of all mobile devices. The touch sensors are integrated directly into the display, the colors are also sharper and 44 percent more saturated.

The iPhone 5 now supports HSPA+, DC-HSDPA networks and also the expected LTE. Inside the new phone is one chip for voice and data and one radio chip. As for LTE support, Apple is working with carriers around the world. In Europe so far with those from Great Britain and Germany. At the same time, iPhone 5 has better Wi-Fi, 802.11n at 2,4 Ghz and 5 Ghz frequencies.

All of this is powered by the brand new Apple A6 chip, which beats in the guts of the sixth generation Apple phone. Compared to the A5 chip (iPhone 4S), it is twice as fast and also 22 percent smaller. Double performance should be felt in all applications. For example, Pages will start more than twice as fast, the music player will start almost twice as fast, and we will also feel faster when saving photos from iPod or viewing a document in Keynote.

After showing off the new racing title Real Racing 3, Phil Schiller returned to the stage and announced that Apple managed to fit an even better battery into the iPhone 5 than the one in the iPhone 4S. iPhone 5 lasts 8 hours on 3G and LTE, 10 hours on Wi-Fi or watching video, 40 hours listening to music and 225 hours in standby mode.

A new camera cannot be missing either. The iPhone 5 is equipped with an eight-megapixel iSight camera with a hybrid IR filter, five lenses and an aperture of f/2,4. The entire lens is then 25% smaller. The iPhone should now take pictures much better in poorer lighting conditions, while taking photos is 40 percent faster. iSight can record 1080p video, has improved image stabilization and face recognition. It is possible to take photos during filming. The front FaceTime camera is finally HD, so it can record video in 720p.

A brand new function related to the camera is the so-called Panorama. iPhone 5 can seamlessly combine several photos to create one large one. An illustrative example was a panoramic photo of the Golden Gate Bridge, which had 28 megapixels.

Apple decided to change or improve everything in the iPhone 5, so we can find three microphones in it - on the bottom, on the front and on the back. The microphones are 20 percent smaller and the audio will have a wide frequency range.

The connector has also undergone rather radical changes. After many years, the 30-pin connector is disappearing and will be replaced by a brand new all-digital connector called Lightning. It is 8-pin, has improved durability, can be connected from both sides and is 80 percent smaller than the original connector from 2003. Apple also remembered the reduction that will be available, and it looks similar to the Camera Connection Kit.

The price of the new iPhone starts at $199 for the 16GB version, $299 for the 32GB version, and $399 for the 64GB version. The iPhone 3GS is no longer available, while the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 remain on sale. Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 start on September 14, and will reach the first owners on September 21. It will arrive in other countries, including the Czech Republic, on September 28. We do not yet have information on Czech prices, but in America the iPhone 5 costs the same as the iPhone 4S. In December of this year, the iPhone 5 should already be available in 240 countries with XNUMX operators.

Speculations about an NFC chip have not been confirmed.
