Although there is currently a lot of speculation about the equipment and appearance of the iPhone 5, which should arrive in the fall of this year, information about new technologies, which we may see in the longer term, also leaks out. One of them is also described by The Wall Street Journal and it is a wireless method of charging the iPhone for 2012, i.e. probably the iPhone 6.

Investors, as well as the professional and lay public, expect major improvements and even a possible expansion of Apple's mobile phone product line in the coming year. There is talk of launching a cheaper and smaller version of the iPhone, which we could easily call the iPhone nano in the future, as is the case with iPods. The latter would probably lack some of the features and hardware of its larger sibling and be more affordable. At the same time, we are witnessing a tough competitive battle in the field of smartphones, the iPhone is no longer miles away from its opponents in terms of hardware, companies are competing with experts, stealing know-how and design. Android is the most significant competitor in the field of operating systems, and together with iOS, they are giving away boxes to Nokia, RIM and Microsoft, who are still looking around on the platform, while the train is already two stations away.

In order to keep up with/ahead of the competition, and perhaps to differentiate its future model lines, Apple needs to focus on cutting-edge technologies and bring them to life in its devices as soon as possible. One of them is the possibility of wireless charging of the iPhone (if successful, but probably also other devices such as iPods and iPads). The sources do not provide details, but it could be an inductive charging method, i.e. that it would be enough to place an iPhone or other iDevice on your desk and a special pad would charge it, without the need for a cable connection. And it is said that a similar method of powering the iPhone is already being tested at Apple. Together with iOS 5, which will offer wireless synchronization, we might see a phone that has no connector at all, data and electricity would be transmitted through the air. Another step towards cleaner design and better user comfort.

It's certainly an interesting idea and inductive charging as such is not new, but the question is what technical obstacles will still stand in the way of Apple's engineers. One of the essentials will certainly be the interior space. Let's be surprised by the new iPhone generations. For now, of course, these are only conjectures and unconfirmed information, many of which are swarming around the iPhone. As one MacRumors discussant aptly put it: "I hear the iPhone 7 is going to be a spaceship."
