Legislators in the US Congress introduced the historic Equality Act, with which they want to eradicate discrimination against the LGBT community in all US states. They have already gained many supporters on their side and the largest technology company, Apple, has officially joined them.

Congressmen want to ensure by federal law that no discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender can occur in any American state, even in the thirty-one states that do not yet have similar protection enacted. In addition to Apple, 150 other entities have already supported the new law.

"At Apple, we believe in treating everyone equally, no matter where they come from, what they look like, who they worship and who they love," Apple said of the latest law for Human Rights Campaign. "We fully support the extension of legal protections as a matter of basic human dignity."

Apple's support for the aforementioned law is not surprising. Under CEO Tim Cook, the Californian giant is increasingly speaking out on the topic of equality and the rights of the LGBT community, and is also trying to bring improvements in this area.

Over six thousand Apple employees in June marched in San Francisco at the Pride Parade and Tim Cook himself for the first time openly last fall he admittedthat he is gay.

Dow Chemical and Levi Strauss have also joined Apple in supporting the new law, but its approval is not yet certain. Republicans are expected to oppose him in Congress.
