If you use a Mac (and to some extent Windows), iTunes is literally your gateway to the world of Apple. It is through iTunes that you rent and watch movies and series, play music through Apple Music or manage podcasts and potentially all multimedia on your iPhones and iPads. However, now it looks like big changes are coming in the upcoming version of macOS, and the iTunes we've known so far will undergo huge changes.

The information was shared on Twitter by developer Steve Troughton-Smith, who cites his very good sources, but does not want to publish them in any way. According to his information, in the upcoming version of macOS 10.15, iTunes as we know it will be broken and Apple will instead come with a batch of several new specialized applications that will focus on individual products offered.

So we should expect a dedicated application for Podcasts and other applications exclusively for Apple Music. These two will then complement the newly prepared Apple TV application as well as the revamped application for books, which should now receive support for audiobooks. All newly developed applications should be built on the UIKit interface.

This whole effort follows the direction that Apple wants to take in the future, which is universal multiplatform applications for macOS and iOS. We could see the tremors of this approach already last year, when Apple published new applications for Actions, Home, Apple News and Recorder, which are almost cross-platform. This year, it is expected that Apple will go more in-depth in this direction, and there will be more and more similar applications.

We will find out in two months, at the WWDC conference, how it will really turn out with the new form of macOS and new (multiplatform) applications.
