In 2015, Apple introduced a brand new 12″ MacBook. As can be seen from the size itself, it was a very basic, but extremely compact and comfortable laptop for traveling, which you could playfully hide in a backpack or purse and go with it practically anywhere. Although it was a very basic model for normal office work on the go, it still offered a relatively high-quality Retina display with a resolution of 2304×1440 pixels in combination with a universal USB-C port. An important feature was also the absence of active cooling in the form of a fan. On the contrary, what he faltered in was performance.

The 12″ MacBook was subsequently updated in 2017, but a very successful future no longer awaited it. In 2019, Apple stopped selling this little thing. Although it was characterized by a refined ultra-thin design, when it was even thinner than the MacBook Air, light weight and compact dimensions, it lost on the performance side. Because of this, the device could only be used for basic tasks, which is quite a shame for a laptop for several tens of thousands. However, now there are more and more intense talks about his return. Apparently, Apple is working on a renewal, and we could see an interesting revival soon. But the question is. Is this a step in the right direction on the part of the Cupertino giant? Does such a device even make sense?

Do we need a 12″ MacBook?

So let's shed some light on that basic question, i.e. do we really need a 12″ MacBook. Although years ago Apple had to cut its development and make an imaginary thick line behind it, today everything could be different. But some apple growers are worried. As we mentioned above, a fundamental question arises: does a smaller Mac make sense? When we look at the apple phone segment, we immediately see the relatively unfortunate fate of the iPhone mini. Although the Apple fans called for the arrival of a smaller phone without any compromises, in the end it was not a blockbuster, in fact, quite the opposite. Both the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 13 mini completely failed in sales, which is why Apple decided to discontinue them. They were then replaced by the larger iPhone 14 Plus model, i.e. a basic phone in a larger body.

But let's get back to the story of the 12″ MacBook. Since the end of sales in 2019, the Apple computer segment has come a long and difficult way. And that could diametrically change the story of the entire device. Of course, we are talking about the transition from Intel processors to Apple's own Silicon solutions, thanks to which the Macs have improved significantly not only in terms of performance, but also in terms of battery life/power consumption. Their own chipsets are even so economical that, for example, MacBook Airs can do without active cooling, which was practically unreal just a few years ago. For this very reason, we could count on the same in the case of this model.

The main benefits of the 12″ MacBook

It is the restoration of the 12″ MacBook in combination with the Apple Silicon chipset that makes the most sense. In this way, Apple could bring the popular compact device to the market again, but it would no longer suffer from earlier errors - the Mac would not suffer in terms of performance, nor would it suffer from overheating and subsequent thermal throttling. As we have already indicated a few times, this would be a first-class laptop for undemanding users who travel often. At the same time, it could be a relatively interesting alternative to the iPad. If someone is looking for the aforementioned device for travel, but does not want to work with an Apple tablet because of its operating system, then the 12″ MacBook seems like an obvious choice.
