Although Apple entered the payment business only a week ago, if we consider the launch of its new Apple Pay service as that start, it immediately became one of the biggest players – according to Apple CEO Tim Cook, his company is already a leader in wireless payments.

One million payment cards were activated on Apple Pay in the first 72 hours, which Cook said was "more than all the other players combined," Apple's boss revealed at the WSJD Live conference.

"We're just getting started, but the start looks great. I get a flood of emails from our customers who are blown away by just using their phone," Cook said, revealing that he, too, has already tried Apple Pay. He used his iPhone to shop at Whole Foods.

The debate also turned to the case surrounding some merchants who started Apple Pay block. According to Cook, even they, for example the CVS chain of pharmacies, will eventually join the new service. "The only way you'll stay relevant in the long term is if your customers love you," Cook said, suggesting that if Apple Pay succeeds, it will find its way into most stores.
