Part of the expected iPadOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura operating systems is a new feature called Stage Manager, which is supposed to facilitate multitasking and overall make working on a specific device more pleasant. Of course, this feature is primarily intended for iPads. They lack significantly in terms of multitasking, while on Macs we have several great options, from which you just have to choose the most popular one. However, the new systems will not be officially released until this fall.

Fortunately, at least beta versions are available, thanks to which we roughly know how Stage Manager works in practice. His idea is quite simple. It allows the user to open several applications at the same time, which are also divided into workgroups. You can switch between them practically in an instant, speeding up the entire work. At least that's the original idea. But as it now turns out, in practice it is no longer so simple.

Apple users do not consider Stage Manager to be a solution

As we mentioned above, Stage Manager seemed at first glance to be the perfect solution to all the problems of the iPadOS operating system. It is this system that has been facing considerable criticism for a long time. Although Apple presents its iPads as a full-fledged replacement for classic computers, in practice it doesn't quite work that way anymore. iPadOS does not support sufficiently high-quality multitasking and therefore cannot deal with cases that, for example, are a matter of course for such a Mac or PC (Windows). Unfortunately, in the final Stage Manager will probably not be the salvation. Aside from the fact that only iPads with the M1 chip (iPad Pro and iPad Air) will receive Stage Manager support, we still encounter a number of other shortcomings.

According to the testers themselves, who have direct experience with the function in iPadOS 16, Stage Manager is rather poorly designed and as a result may not work as you might have imagined at first glance. Many apple growers also agree on a rather interesting idea. According to her, not even Apple itself knows how it wants to achieve multitasking in iPadOS, or what it intends to do with it. The appearance and functionality of Stage Manager rather show that the giant wants to differentiate itself from the macOS/Windows approach at all costs and come up with something newer, which may not work so well anymore. Therefore, this whole new thing seems rather dubious and raises great concerns about the future of Apple tablets - as if Apple is trying to reinvent what has already been discovered, rather than just giving its users what they have been asking for for years. It is therefore not surprising that many testers are very frustrated and disappointed.

The future of iPads

As we mentioned above, the current development raises questions related to the future of iPads themselves. For literally years, Apple users have been calling for the iPadOS system to at least come close to macOS and offer, for example, work with windows, which would significantly support precisely that multitasking. After all, criticism of the iPad Pro is also related to this. The most expensive model ever, with a 12,9″ screen, 2TB storage and Wi-Fi+Cellular connection, will cost you CZK 65. Although at first glance this is an unrivaled piece with tremendous performance to give away, in reality you will not even be able to use it to the full - you will be limited by the operating system.

On the other hand, not all days are over yet. The official version of the iPadOS 16 operating system has not been released yet, so there is still at least a small chance for overall improvement. However, it will be more important to monitor the upcoming performance of the Apple tablet system. Are you satisfied with its current form, or should Apple finally bring a proper solution for multitasking?
