Despite lower Mac sales in the last fiscal quarter, Apple became the largest PC seller in the last quarter of 2012 with more than 20% share, but only if the iPad is counted as a computer. According to the company's research Canalys Apple sold 4 million Macs and almost 23 million iPads in the last three months of last year. The record sales figures for tablets were mainly contributed by the iPad mini, which should have contributed around fifty percent.

The total of 27 million PCs sold helped Apple surpass Hewlett-Packard, which reported 15 million PC sales, roughly 200 more than third-place Lenovo. Both have 000 percent of the share in the fourth quarter. Fourth place was taken by Samsung thanks to strong Christmas sales with nine percent (11 million computers), and Dell, which sold 11,7 million computers, rounded out the top five.

Despite record sales, Apple's tablet share continues to decline, falling to an all-time low of 49 percent in the latest quarter. This was mainly helped by strong sales of Samsung tablets, of which the Korean company sold 7,6 million, and the Kindle Fire family with 4,6 million units sold, taking a full 18% of the tablet market. Together with Google's Nexus Tablets, Android gained a 46 percent share. Thanks to tablets, the computer market saw a year-on-year increase of 12 percent with a total of 134 million devices sold, with Apple accounting for a full fifth with its 27 million units. But all this is provided that we count tablets among computers.
