In June, a big interview will appear on the Bloomberg website with Tim Cook, who completed it in the studio in the past few days. Records of what Cook talked about with host David Rubenstein have become public. It came down to both Apple's situation and politics — particularly the imposition of tariffs on select Chinese commodities from the Donald Trump administration's workshop. There was also information that Apple managed to overcome a big milestone in connection with Apple Music.

We'll have to wait a few more weeks for the full interview. However, what we already know today is that in May Apple Music managed to cross the threshold of 50 million active users. Tim Cook himself mentioned it when he commented on the topics of the above-mentioned interview. However, a meta of 50 million users does not mean that all fifty million are paying. The last information we got about the number of paying Apple Music customers was in early April, when it was a small number over 40 million. The mentioned 50 million also includes users who are currently using some form of trial. There were about 8 million of them in April.

So in practice, this means that Apple Music has gained roughly two million additional paying customers per month, which is in line with a long-term trend that has been playing out over the past few months. Apple could conquer 50 million real paying customers by the fall (and brag about it, for example, at the September keynote). Apple Music's streaming service is growing slightly faster than rival Spotify, but Spotify has a very comfortable lead in terms of total subscribers.
