Apple has agreed to pay up to $500 million in damages to users of older iPhones for throttling their iPhones without their knowledge. This time, the compensation applies only to Americans who used an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus or iPhone SE and had at least iOS 10.2.1 installed before December 21, 2017.

The cornerstone of the class action was changes to iOS that caused iPhones to perform poorly. It turned out that older batteries could not keep the performance of the iPhone at 100 percent, and sometimes it happened to users that the device restarted. Apple responded to this in February 2017 by limiting performance, but the problem was that it did not inform customers about this change.

Reuters reported today that Apple has denied wrongdoing, but to avoid lengthy court battles, the company has agreed to pay damages. More precisely, it is a payment of 25 dollars for one iPhone, with the fact that this amount can be higher or, on the contrary, lower. However, in total, the compensation must exceed the amount of 310 million dollars.

At the time of the revelation, it was a relatively big scandal, Apple finally apologized in December 2017 and at the same time the company promised changes. In 2018, battery replacement was made cheaper, and most importantly, the option to display battery status and a power slowdown switch appeared in iOS settings. Users can decide for themselves whether they want to have the full performance of the device with the occasional system crash, or if they want to throttle performance in exchange for a stable system. In addition, with newer iPhones this is not such a problem, thanks to changes in the hardware, the performance limitation is almost minimized.
