In apple operating systems, you will find the native Maps application, or Apple Maps, which lags behind its competitors. Although Apple is trying to gradually improve this app, it is not quite the fastest and simply does not reach the quality of competing maps from Google or the domestic Seznam. One of the functions that could move the apple solution forward a bit is Look Around, which is supposed to function as a competitor to Street View (Google) and Panorama (Mapy.cz). But there is a catch. Apple has virtually nothing mapped on a global scale, which is why we simply cannot enjoy this gadget in our country. When will this change?

The flame of hope for change ignited last year in June, when Apple cars were spotted in the Czech Republic designed specifically for collecting the necessary data. However, some time has passed since then and it is still not clear when this function will actually be launched, nor how the Cupertino giant is doing in terms of data collection in general. In this direction, the known data about the implementation of Look Around in the world, which is of course publicly available and can be easily traced, could help us. And the way it looks, we'll still have to wait for some Friday.

Look Around in the Czech Republic

As we mentioned above, data collection in our region started roughly before the beginning of last summer. At that time, an Apple vehicle was spotted in České Budějovice, according to which we can conclude that Apple should have mapped at least the most important, i.e. regional cities of our republic. Moreover, the Look Around function itself is not even that old. Its first official unveiling was only in June 2019, when Apple presented it as part of the newly introduced operating system iOS 13. However, the function has had problems from the beginning, namely with coverage. For example, while Google's rival Street View covers the vast majority of the United States, Look Around is functional only in some areas and thus covers a tiny percentage of the total area of the US.

According to available information, Apple started collecting data as early as 2015. When we think about it, the primary goal of the apple company is of course to cover its homeland, namely the United States of America. And when we look at it with this information in mind, we can see that Look Around is noticeably lagging behind. If it took the giant 4 years to collect data for basic American areas (for example, California), it is quite likely that in the case of the Czech Republic, the whole process will take a little longer. For this reason, we will probably have to wait a while for the function.

Look Around in Apple Maps

It doesn't stop when the function is activated

Unfortunately, functions such as Look Around, Street View and Panorama require care after they are put into operation. While Google and Mapy.cz are constantly traveling through our country and taking new images, thanks to which they can offer the most faithful experience possible, the question is how Apple will approach this task. Of course, a small country like the Czech Republic is not that interesting for Apple, which is why there are questions not only about the launch of the function as such, but also about its subsequent maintenance. Would you like this apple solution, or do you prefer tools from competitors?
