During the WWDC conference, Apple mentioned Maps several times, which will receive further updates in iOS 13 and macOS Catalina. On the one hand, we can look forward to updated and significantly more detailed map data, on the other, several completely new functions will be added, for which Apple has obviously taken inspiration from the competition. However, there may be nothing wrong with that when Apple's solution is much more successful.

Yes, we are talking about a new product called Look Around. It is practically the Apple version of the popular Google Street View, i.e. the ability to "walk through" the location you are looking for in the form of photographed and connected images. Probably each of us has used Street View before and we have a clear idea of what to expect from it. Samples of what Apple's design looks like appeared on the web last week, and according to the published samples, it looks like Apple has the upper hand. However, there is a major catch.

If you look at the minute-long GIF in the Tweet attached above, it's clear at first glance which solution is better during the comparison. Apple Look Around is a far more pleasant and well-designed solution, because Apple has an advantage in the way of acquiring image data. Compared to a system of several cameras creating one 360-degree image after another, Apple scans the surroundings with the help of a 360-degree camera connected to LIDAR sensors, which allows for much more accurate mapping of the surroundings and creates a uniform image flow. Movement through the streets with the help of Look Around is thus much smoother and details are clearer.

The catch, however, is the availability of this service. Initially, Look Around will only be available in selected US cities, with availability gradually improving. However, Apple has to collect the image data first, and it won't be easy. It can be found on the official website itinerary, in which Apple informs when and where terrain mapping will occur.

From European countries it is on this list just Spain, Great Britain, Ireland and Italy. In these countries, road scanning has been going on since around April and should end during the holidays. Other countries, including the Czech Republic, are not in the list of planned countries, so it can be expected that we will not see Look Around in the Czech Republic before a year from now.
