Apple has bought Danish startup Spektral, which develops software in the field of video and visual effects. More specifically, in Spektral, they focus on technologies that can replace the background of the captured scene with something completely different. A Danish newspaper reported on the acquisition Borsen.

In recent months, Spektral engineers have developed a special technology that can isolate the background of the scanned object and replace it with something completely different. In essence, they simulate the presence of a green screen in moments when there is no green background behind the filmed object. With the help of machine learning and artificial intelligence, the invented software is able to recognize an object in the foreground and isolate it from its surroundings, which can then be completely changed according to the user's requirements.

The above-mentioned technologies can be applied primarily for the needs of augmented reality. It can therefore be expected that the results of the acquisition will be reflected in Apple's projects that work with augmented reality in the future. For example, it will be possible to isolate viewed objects or project a specific image or information into their surroundings. There will certainly be opportunities for use in photos, video and other functions that use the camera. In a way, Apple could also use the new technology in the development of its glasses for augmented reality.

The acquisition reportedly took place at the end of last year, and Apple paid roughly $30 million (DKK 200 million) for the startup. Members of original management are currently traceable as Apple employees.
