Yesterday we wrote about unofficial information that started appearing on the web on Friday evening. According to her, Apple should have bought the company Shazam, which runs a popular service for recognizing audio tracks, for $400 million. Last night, an official statement finally appeared on the web, confirming the acquisition and adding a few more details. So far, no information has appeared anywhere about why Apple actually bought the service and what the company is pursuing with this acquisition. We will probably know the results of this effort in time...

We're excited to announce the addition of Shazam and all of its talented developers to Apple. Shazam has been one of the most popular and downloaded apps ever since it first launched on the App Store. Today, its services are used by hundreds of millions of users, all over the world and on several different platforms.

Apple Music and Shazam belong together perfectly. Both services share a passion for exploring all kinds of musical nooks and crannies and discovering the unknown, as well as offering extraordinary experiences to their users. We have really big plans for Shazam and we're really looking forward to being able to connect the two services into one.

Currently, Shazam works as a kind of plug-in for Siri. Whenever you hear a song, you can ask Siri on your iPhone/iPad/Mac what it's playing. And it will be Shazam, thanks to which Siri will be able to answer you.

It is not yet clear what exactly Apple will use the newly acquired technology for. However, it can be expected that we will see the application in practice relatively soon, given that some cooperation is already underway. Thus, complete integration should not be too difficult. The amount for which Apple bought the company was not disclosed, but the "official estimate" is around $400 million. Likewise, it is not yet clear what will happen to the application on other platforms.
