Apple appears to have bought another smaller company with a very narrow focus. This time it's the Swedish company AlgoTrim, which specializes in image compression techniques, especially JPEG formats, on mobile devices, which enables faster photo processing on devices with limited battery life.

AlgoTrim develops advanced solutions for mobile devices in data compression, mobile photo and video, and computer graphics.

These solutions are designed to excel in terms of high performance and low memory requirements, which is ideal for mobile devices. Many solutions offered by AlgoTrim are the fastest codecs on the market, such as a lossless codec for general data compression and codecs for photos.

Until now, AlgoTrim has been more involved in development for Android, so it can be expected that all activities within the competitive mobile operating system will end very quickly. AlgoTrim is not the first Swedish company that Apple has bought, before that it was companies for example Polar Rose in 2010 (facial recognition) or C3 a year later (maps).

For Apple, this acquisition could bring improved algorithmic performance in lossless compression, which would especially benefit the camera and other applications that process photos and images. Likewise, battery life should improve with these actions. The American company has not yet confirmed the purchase, nor is it known the amount for which the Swedish company was bought. However, last year AlgoTrim achieved a profit of three million dollars and a pre-tax profit of 1,1 million euros.
